0:08 United in this place of Prayer, each individual soul joined in community of worship
0:16 One God
0:19 LA ILAHA ILLA ALLAH
0:29 ALLAH-O AKBAR
0:45 Praise God. We bear witness that there is no god except the One God.
0:50 There's no other gods or idols besides Him.
0:56 In the last KHUTBA, we reached the conclusion that you do not really believe in God
1:03 unless you know that He's doing everything.
1:09 You make the initial decision, this is our role.
1:13 We make a decision,
1:14 a decision to be with God or not
1:17 and "not" means you'll be with Satan
1:20 because there's no other choice. You're either with God or with Satan.
1:23 And this is the decision where we have absolute freedom of choice.
1:30 After that you're either guided by God or messed up by Satan,
1:35 but the Ultimate Doer of everything is God.
1:39 And everything's happening in accordance with God's will.
1:49 I want today to compare our priorities.
2:02 I just remembered an idea, I have to write it down so I don't forget.
2:07 I want to use the board here to illustrate something about priorities.
2:21 Most people do not know who they are.
2:24 We recognize now the human being as consisting of two entities,
2:30 just to make it very simple, the body and the soul.
2:37 The body goes on for, let's be optimistic, about 100 years
2:48 and then it dies, becomes nothing. The soul is the real person,
2:55 the real "you." This is the real person right here and
3:00 it goes on for eternity.
3:05 The body has requirements and the soul has requirements.
3:11 The body... now, what I want to compare here is what we do for this entity
3:18 and what we do for this entity.
3:21 For this entity, people
3:24 starting with an infant: the infant is given milk and nourished, given shots,
3:31 painful shots, and grow in pains
3:38 and teething and then they go to school,
3:42 the body goes to school. You know, you have to go to school, right?
3:47 If you wanna be... there's a commercial on the radio and TV now by,
3:51 what is the name of that comic cat?
3:54 Garfield. He said "if you wanna be a fact cat, go to school, go to college." I think he said.
4:02 So, you go to school
4:04 and you take tests
4:07 and go through the homeworks
4:10 and the absence reports and chastising from the parents and the teachers
4:18 and working very hard studying.
4:21 You know, school is not popular with most of us.
4:26 You go through grade school, junior high school.
4:31 Then, you go to high school and all the hard work involved in it and you're so glad to
4:35 graduate only to go into college. Then, you're a freshman
4:41 and you study very hard and work and you're very busy,
4:46 you know, devoting a lot of effort and time and money to go to school because
4:50 why? Because this body, you want it to dress nicely, you have good clothes,
4:56 and you want to buy a house, preferably in the foothills
5:02 with so many rooms and luxuries and carpets and drapes.
5:07 This body wants that.
5:09 And you work hard for that. You graduate from college and you apply for jobs.
5:16 You go to the placement office
5:19 and you stand in line for the interviewer, the people who interview you
5:23 and you are very polite to be interviewed. You want to be bright.
5:28 You want to pretend to be bright and you want to put on your best appearance
5:34 and some sense of humor and intelligence, abilities, you know. You pretend to be perfect
5:41 for the interview and you get the job
5:45 and then you do a lousy job and you're fired.
5:48 Then, you apply for other jobs
5:50 and you're miserable.
5:50 You know, all this is, this is for the body because the body wants clothes, housing, food
6:00 and we do all this work for the body. Now, what are they doing for the soul,
6:07 the average person? Now, this is the real person.
6:11 Now, after all this, the body dies, goes to dust, becomes nothing.
6:20 There was a person... this body will belong to a person called Rock Hudson, remember that name?
6:26 Rock Hudson. Ok. He died recently.
6:28 That's why you still remember him. And Rock Hudson was a very successful person
6:34 lots of money, fame,
6:37 covers, magazine covers, in the front covers, TV movies, wealth, Beverly Hills mansion.
6:47 This body, his body had a lot of fun
6:51 and he also broke God's law, as we know, and he died in humiliation.
6:56 Now, now the real person, Rock Hudson, does exist, the real person.
7:01 What did he do for this body?
7:03 And what did he do for this? What did the fame and money bring him?
7:09 What was the value of the fame and the money that he accumulated?
7:16 Remember George Liberace? The glitter, the suits that he was wearing
7:24 and the showmanship and the clapping, the people clapping for him, the performances he gave,
7:30 and how many millions of dollars he made.
7:33 But how much does he, the real person, have?
7:36 At the end, the mortician was afraid to touch him
7:40 because of the virus, AIDS virus.
7:45 Rockefeller, any of them. So, the body, people work very hard for this entity here.
7:55 What do they do for "the soul"?
7:56 This is the question.
7:57 What I'm trying to bring out is rearranging our priorities, or putting our priorities in perspective.
8:07 What are we doing for the soul? What does the soul need?
8:10 The soul needs worshiping God Alone.
8:16 This is the first step
8:18 because the soul is part of God in any way you want to look at it.
8:23 Because God said "I blew into Adam from My spirit."
8:28 So, the soul needs to worship God alone
8:30 and then it needs food, nutrition,
8:34 the five daily meals. The five prayers are needed.
8:41 You need the fasting.
8:47 People like Rock Hudson, for example, he put himself in the service of this body.
8:55 He was serving this body.
8:57 Whatever the body wants, he gave it,
9:01 but he neglected "himself."
9:05 And if "the soul" was this size when he started,
9:09 it is still this size now, didn't grow. He didn't feed his soul.
9:14 His priorities were mixed up. I'm using a real person as an example
9:18 because here's a person who attained fame and fortune.
9:26 The conclusion from this is that anything that we do that is not developing our soul is a waste of time.
9:37 If you do anything that has nothing to do with God is a waste of time.
9:40 So, when you wake up in the morning, until the end of the day, you ask yourself
9:45 "am I doing this for God?"
9:50 which is, which is another word for feeding your soul
9:53 because anything you do for God causes your soul to grow and develop.
9:58 It is actually for yourself, for the real entity.
10:02 So, we have to rearrange our priorities,
10:07 put them in perspective.
10:10 How much of the day are you doing for the body and how much are you doing for you?
10:16 You went to school and suffered through examinations to have a good job.
10:23 What did you do for you?
10:33 By the way, the hundred years compared to infinity is zero.
10:38 So, this is the proportion that you should do for yourself and for your body.
10:45 You should do zero for your body and you should do 100% for you.
10:52 It is not intelligent otherwise
10:55 because this is zero.
10:56 It's going to be nothing.
10:58 So, you have to put this in the service of you
11:01 and not the other way around.
11:03 Almost everybody out there has their priorities reversed.
11:07 They put this in the service of a vanishing garment.
11:29 TUBU ILLA ALLAH. Repent.
11:50 ALHAMDU LILLAH. WA ASH HADU AN LA ILAHA ILLA ALLAH, WAHDAHU LA SHARIKA LAH.
11:58 From this diagram, I want to move on to comparing
12:06 a believer, a Muslim, one who submitted to God, and a regular person.
12:16 I was looking out the window the other day. I prayed my morning prayer
12:22 and about an hour later, one of my neighbors...
12:27 I was looking out the window and I saw the neighbor coming out
12:31 and he was obviously very sleepy.
12:38 His hair was all messed up and you can imagine, a person who just got up, you know,
12:42 he's walking like this. He can hardly walk. He's young. I mean, he's not old.
12:47 His clothes are a mess and he was out to get the newspaper.
12:53 Now, a Muslim wakes up in the morning, the first thing he says, or she says
12:57 بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ. لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وحده لا شریک له
13:01 The first thing a person says. Remember we pledged this in one of the KHUTBAs.
13:06 The first thing you're going... I hope you didn't forget.
13:09 We do forget once in a while but the first thing when you get up in the morning:
13:13 بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
13:15 "In the name of God"
13:17 لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وحده لا شریک له
13:19 because this is what you will say when you get up on the Day of Resurrection,
13:22 whatever you say every morning.
13:26 And I have to repeat what most people say when they get up in the morning and they look in the clock
13:32 And it is oh sh**, and this is what they will say.
13:36 This is exactly what they'll say on the Day of Judgement when they get up in the morning
13:38 "Oh sh**"
13:43 Because usually they are up late, you know, they get up. They turn the alarm off and go back to sleep
13:50 And then when they get up next time, it's too late and they utter the four-letter words.
13:57 So, the Muslim gets up in the morning:
13:59 بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ. لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وحده لا شریک له
14:02 When you get up on the Day of Resurrection,
14:04 if this is a habit here,
14:05 it's gonna be a habit also on the Day of Judgement.
14:08 God will see to it. God will help you.
14:12 And there is no place to go to, when you get up on the Day of Resurrection, saying
14:15 بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ. لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهُ وحده لا شریک له
14:19 "There's only One God." There's no place to go but Heaven on the Day of Resurrection.
14:24 So, this is what the Muslim does. Now, what did my neighbor do when he got up in the morning
14:29 looking for the paper?
14:30 God is not on his mind.
14:31 Let's take the average person.
14:32 I hope God was in his mind,
14:34 but it didn't look like it.
14:36 And then the Muslim goes to do his ablution or her ablution.
14:41 You go and do ablution in the morning and you pray the morning.
14:45 This is the first thing you do.
14:47 And this act of ablution and the morning prayer is very refreshing.
14:51 You're alert.
14:52 You look nice.
14:54 You washed your face.
14:55 You combed your hair.
14:57 You will not look like this guy.
14:59 I mean, he really looked, looked terrible.
15:02 You only see that in the movies, somebody just got up out of bed, you know.
15:07 The Muslim commemorates God in every chance he or she gets.
15:15 The Muslim sees the sunrise and says "SUBHAN ALLAH."
15:18 All these are nutritions for the soul,
15:24 for you, the real person.
15:25 And your soul grows when you say "SUBHAN ALLAH," Glory be to God
15:28 as you see the Sun rising,
15:30 because you're always conscious of God.
15:33 The Sun is rising exactly at the precise second
15:37 and from the same spot that it is supposed to, without delay.
15:43 And God committed that sun in your service.
15:45 And you say "SUBHAN ALLAH."
15:50 You look at the flower and you do the same thing.
15:53 Then, you make a telephone call to one of your friends or associates and you say
15:58 "tomorrow, I'm going to do this and that, IN SHAA ALLAH," God willing.
16:03 There's a certain behavior of the person who has submitted to God because you know that "God is doing everything"
16:10 and you know that you will do this and that tomorrow only because God wills.
16:16 But God will do that.
16:20 And the Quran gives you this very clear commandment.
16:24 And then your kids get up and you admire them and you say "Mã Shã Allãh."
16:30 "This is God's giving to you." This is God's will that you have these children
16:36 and you thank God.
16:37 Now, the non-Muslim is unaware.
16:40 God is not on his or her mind at all.
16:43 And they are neglecting the real person,
16:47 themselves, neglecting themselves.
16:50 They'll be very careful to have breakfast,
16:53 but they will not give breakfast to their soul.
16:58 So, you are living 24 hours a day, you are commemorating your Creator. And you are...
17:04 Your Creator doesn't need that. God doesn't need any of our prayers or our worship.
17:10 We do.
17:11 So, you are being prepared for the eternal life which is coming.
17:17 You don't see anybody around who's 200 years old, do you?
17:20 You haven't heard of anyone.
17:23 It's coming, the Day of Resurrection.
17:25 And then, you'll be assigned that eternal rank
17:28 depending on the spot where you qualified, how much growth you did.
17:40 So, so far I talked about rearranging the priorities or putting the priorities in perspective
17:46 and how much time we devote to your soul,
17:49 the real person
17:52 and how much time you give to your job and your boss and your family and so on strictly.
17:57 You can give time to your family in the cause of God.
18:02 Our priorities must be in perspective.
18:09 This is why you are here for the Friday prayer. You dropped all business and you
18:13 are here for the Friday prayer. This is the correct priority. Anytime you are not
18:19 here on Friday,
18:22 you're out of God's grace. It's a commandment for every Friday.
18:26 You drop all business and you go to the Friday prayer. And God associates this
18:31 with business and profit. And God said "it is better for you to drop business."
18:38 And because God runs the world, "God is doing everything" and when you drop your
18:41 business and go to the Friday prayer as God commands you to, God will see to it
18:47 that you make more money, more profit. And you don't care but it will come.
18:55 "Rearranging or putting our priorities in perspective"
19:01 I'm gonna read a couple of verses from the Quran that deal with this
19:05 subject of priorities.
19:11 In SURA 18 starting at verse 45, it says "cite for them...
19:19 أعوذ بالله من الشيطن الرجيم
19:21 I seek refuge in God from Satan.
19:24 بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
19:26 In the name of God. It says "cite for them the example of this world like sending water
19:34 from the sky that causes plants to grow on the earth and then turns to hay, blown
19:41 away by the wind." This is this world. This is the example of
19:45 this world in verse 45 of SURA 18. The plant grows. It is strong. You see all
19:54 those flowers out there? They're very nice. Watch them. They're gonna turn into
19:58 dry something like hay and they'll blow away. In fact, the time will come and you'll
20:04 say "I want to remove these stuff from here" because it's gonna be dry and
20:08 shriveled. And this is how this world is.
20:13 The next verse
20:18 it says that "money and children are the beauty of this life or the
20:25 adornments of this life." This is the good things of this
20:30 life: money and children. In Arabic: ٱلْمَالُ وَٱلْبَنُونَ زِينَةُ ٱلْحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنْيَا
20:35 And I've heard many people, they say "God says that money and children are the adornments of this life.
20:40 I have lots of children. Where is the money?"
20:43 But generally, money and children are adorning, are the beauties, or the
20:54 the adornment of this life, but and then the rest of the verse says
20:58 "However the eternal righteous works."
21:00 وَٱلْبَـٰقِيَـٰتُ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتُ in Arabic
21:03 that "the righteous works that last forever"
21:07 to talk about the real person here.
21:10 are far better for you. So, money and children and properties
21:17 in this world, they are the good things in this life.
21:23 And God tells us what is better than that. Like I mentioned in the last KHUTBA
21:28 worshipping God alone and nourishing your real person, the Quran says, is much
21:34 better than owning everything on this earth and twice as much.
21:41 All the real estate in Vancouver and New York.
21:50 All the real estate in the whole world. All the oil, the gold, the diamonds.
21:56 Believing in God alone and feeding, nourishing your real person is much
22:02 better. When you have the right perspective, is much better than owning everything on
22:06 earth and twice as much. So, this verse 46 of SURA 18 says "money and children are
22:13 the beauties or the good things of this world, but the righteous works
22:17 that last forever are far better and provide better hope وَخَيْرٌ أَمَلًۭا
22:22 The end of the verse is خَيْرٌ أَمَلًۭا There is better hope in them. There
22:27 is no hope in the properties. Rock Hudson was very famous and very rich.
22:32 George Liberace's mansion still you can go as a tourist and look at it, but he's
22:36 not there
22:39 because there's something better that he could have acquired.
22:42 That is righteous works and developing his soul in order to withstand life next to God
22:50 in the Hereafter. If he didn't develop his soul, he will not stand being close to
22:55 God. And the verse 47 says "because the day will come when we remove the
23:01 mountains and you see the Earth
23:05 barren." Everything will go. "and then we will gather every single one.
23:12 The Arabic says فَلَمْ نُغَادِرْ مِنْهُمْ أَحَدًۭا "We will not leave a single person."
23:18 God says "we're gonna gather everybody" to, for this
23:25 reckoning. How much did you do for this vanishing garment? How much did you do
23:29 for yourself? The reckoning is gonna be automatic, but every single one will
23:34 come to account.
23:40 The next verses go on and describe why the righteous works, and feeding your
23:45 soul is the number one priority. That when you do anything else, it's a
23:52 waste of time. Anything else that does not develop your soul is a waste of time.
23:57 And missing a Friday prayer... I'm using this because you're all here... when you miss a
24:01 Friday prayer for any reason, it's a terrible terrible loss.
24:06 Because being once a week at congregational prayer where you meet
24:10 your brothers and sisters, and it's a commandment from God to do this. When you
24:15 miss it, you miss a lot. I mean, I cannot put it in billions of
24:19 dollars. We have to always remember the right
24:24 perspective. And the advice in Quran is to commemorate
24:28 commemorate God 24 hours a day, every chance you get. You can turn your work
24:34 into worship.
24:37 You can take the mail from the fellow. Open it. He has a express mail thing.
24:47 And I need it. Bring it. These are papers that I need.
24:55 It's one o'clock so I'm gonna read some material and some kind of a quiz.
25:02 I want you to find out or think where it is from. Ok?
25:09 Every addition or omission of a word or even of a single letter from
25:16 the sacred text of the prayers destroys the religious meaning of the
25:21 prayer as a whole and is to be regarded as a grave sin,
25:27 a sin which could result in eternal exile for those who commit it.
25:32 Remember there are certain statements of Quran that says وَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ "woe to
25:37 those who are doing their prayer." I mean, those are people who are doing their
25:41 prayer, but they end up in the negative because they are heedless of their
25:46 prayers or because there are other reasons. So, you must make sure that your
25:51 prayer is perfect, your SALAT, your contact. I'm not talking about
25:55 supplications. I'm talking about your Contact Prayers.
25:59 It is a recognized statement in Quran وَيْلٌ لِلْمُصَلِّينَ
26:03 "Woe to those who are doing their Salat prayer." الَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنْ صَلَاتِهِمْ سَاهُونَ
26:06 "who are heedless of their prayers." They are not aware or they are neglecting something. Let me read
26:12 this again. And I wanted to apply it to our Contact Prayer here. See, Barry is
26:18 visiting us for the first time and he will wonder why do we do the prayer in Arabic
26:22 and why this particular prayer, for example. And all of us asked this question.
26:26 In fact, it's gonna come up. So, let me read this again.
26:31 "Every addition or omission
26:35 of a word or even a single letter." Now, we in this mosque fully appreciate the
26:42 mathematical composition of everything that's connected with our worships, the
26:47 Quran and even the bones in our body and everything else. So, we should
26:52 appreciate what is written here.
26:56 "Every addition or omission of a word or even of a single letter from the sacred
27:01 text..." Al-Fãtehah is the sacred text that God gave us,
27:07 the first SURA of Quran. We cannot add anything to it. As you know, Satan
27:11 succeeded everywhere in the Muslim world, they add the word "Amen."
27:16 And our people in Washington DC have a radio program and I have one of the tapes
27:20 here talking about this "Amen." And they got it from a dictionary, some
27:27 recognized dictionary and they read what "Amen" is. It turned out to be an old
27:31 Hebrew-Greek something word that has nothing to do with Arabic. It is not in the Quran, but
27:36 here this is why Satan tricked the people into adding it.
27:41 "Every addition or omission of a word or even a single letter from the sacred
27:45 text of the payers destroys the religious meaning of the prayer as a
27:49 whole and is to be regarded as a grave sin." So, here's a person doing the prayers
27:55 committing a grave sin. OK. Let me go to another section.
28:01 As I go, you will guess what I'm reading from. "He and his disciples evolved a
28:07 mystical theory according to which the words and letters of the various prayers
28:13 are not accidental
28:16 nor are they only vehicles for which literal... for their literal meaning." I mean,
28:22 ٱهْدِنَا ٱلصِّرَٰطَ ٱلْمُسْتَقِيمَ "Guide us on the right path"
28:25 is wonderful but we are not saying the Contact Prayer for this literal meaning.
28:29 There is much more to it. So, listen to this. "Nor are they
28:34 only vehicles for their literal meaning, their order and especially their numbers..."
28:41 We certainly appreciate that "...reflect a mystical harmony, a sacred divine
28:46 rhythm."
28:49 Next.
28:53 "No change can be tolerated in the text of the prayers not even a minute one
28:59 because every change even of one letter would destroy the numerical harmony
29:05 inherent in the text." So, every letter that God composed in the first SURA
29:10 of Quran, Al-Fãtehah, is numerically controlled.
29:15 The sounds, when you say
29:16 ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ ٱلْعَـٰلَمِينَ
29:18 this is composed by God for a specific reason, a combination that causes your contact with your Creator.
29:25 Oh, listen! It's coming up.
29:29 "It does not matter; therefore, whether the change is beneficial from the point of
29:33 view of meaning and content." I mean, you may think of composing a Shakespearean excellent
29:40 literary marvel that praises God. It doesn't mean a thing. Forget it. It is not the
29:47 meaning we're after. It's the numerical composition and the sounds.
29:52 "For this level of meaning is not the most important one in the prayers.
29:59 The text was formed" by God - I'm adding this "by God" - "to reflect mystical
30:04 harmony and any change would destroy it." The second point here is the liturgy
30:11 that is the contact prayers' Al-Fãtehah. "The liturgy received new importance and
30:16 new meaning within the framework of religious practice." After discovering the
30:20 numerical importance of it. "A completely new dimension was added in this way to the
30:26 daily prayer service. It stopped being just a reciting of requests and
30:32 praises of God in ancient formulas." Arabic, for example.
30:36 "And became a vehicle for becoming a participant in a mystical divine
30:41 harmony. The prayers suddenly received a new depth of meaning and importance
30:47 which was undreamed of in the thousand years that had passed since they were
30:52 formulated." Next.
31:01 Okay, this will really tell you what this is coming from.
31:05 The quiz becomes easier and easier. "The fierce polemical tone of Rabbi Judah's
31:10 criticism of the changes introduced by the Frenchmen in the prayers
31:14 can therefore be explained as a result of his fear that the prayers may be
31:19 regarded as completely human in origin and meaning making them secular and
31:24 meaningless in religious and mystical practices." A lot of people accuse me of
31:29 being harsh with some people who are making changes in the prayers or in the
31:34 Quran or in the practices of religion, but there is a precedent. It is fear for
31:42 these people and it is concern for them.
31:47 "According to him, even if the content and meaning of the prayer is religious, expressing
31:53 love and devotion to God, it still will be just called a secular song like that
31:59 of the non-jews if it does not have the added mystical dimension of hidden truth,
32:05 which cannot be revealed by the literal meaning of the words alone. In his
32:11 polemic, Rabbi Judah does not defend only the specific tradition of prayer which
32:16 he received from his parents and teachers, he also defends prayer as an
32:20 elevating force forming a connection" - connection: SALAT - "a connection between
32:25 man and God, a connection that no mere words can achieve." So, it is not just
32:31 the words. There's a numerical mysticism in it. And the last section...
32:40 "All God-fearing people, when they pray, have to direct their prayers when they
32:46 say "blessed is God" ٱلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ "When they say "blessed is God"
32:52 and when they kneel before Him and thank Him and direct their prayers in their
32:56 hearts only to His holiness alone, within which is His glory and which has neither
33:04 form nor image." You direct it to God Alone. AQEM AL-SALAT.
